Please write an essay, approximately 500-700 words (typically one page) in length on one of following topics. Check the box for your topic. Thomas Edison failed many times before successfully inventing the modern electric light bulb. He said, If I find 10,000 ways something wont work, I havent failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.  Reflect on a challenge you overcame through persistence.

 Version1
I can think of two occasions where I showed a lot of persistence and overcame a challenge. One was in my secondary school and the other one was soon after I came to the US.

As long as I was in Indonesia where I finished my primary and secondary education I was totally content. Life was good to me, I was a businessmans child, totally comfortable, all my needs were taken care of and I could ask for no more. I studied well in my primary school and got good grades. I was also training for Soccer and always trained very hard and did what the coach told me which lead me to be in the starting line up. Once I came to secondary school, the trouble started. There were difficulties in my subjects and frequently my grades fell. But I had to devote time to both soccer and my studies and there was a slight shift in focus. I was feeling terrible that I did not do too well in studies and was dejected on many occasions. However, my Soccer game was always my passion and gave me solace. In Secondary education I joined soccer club in my school and got the starting line up for the entire junior and senior high school era because of my hard work and training.

I got some awards also, a champion award twice and a runner-up award once. In addition I got some individual awards - top scorer twice and 1 MVP. Another individual award was that I got a medal for marathon champion.

While my sports life gave me satisfaction my studies in secondary school filled me with dejection. I tried to analyze where I went wrong and realized that I was too absorbed in sports and expected to get good grades without proper work in that direction. There was a lack of focus and I could not understand what the teacher was explaining. But my ultimate aim was always to acquire a Graduate degree in Finance and be of help to my father, running his business. I soon came to grip with the situation and with a lot of persistence changed my approach to studies. With great determination I whipped myself to allocate the right sort of time to studies and sports and manage my time well. Soon my grades improved and I was also doing well in sports as reflected by the awards I got. I am very happy and satisfied that with excellent time management I did justice to both sports and school. It called for a lot of rigor at that point of time because initially I was on the brink of despair.

The second occasion where I had to overcome a real challenge was in 2008 when I came first to the US.I was from Indonesia and my confidence took a beating as soon as I entered college in the US. It was not what I had dreamt of. I had the notion that US was the best place to live where we could get the best of everything. But it was not that easy. I had to adapt to the difference in culture and this was not simple. Secondly my English was not too good and I was tongue tied with all the people around me. There were students from different countries and I had to muster a lot of courage to be outgoing. My sister helped me to adapt to the situation and once again I reminded myself of how I had managed to get over my difficulties in secondary school. I shed my inhibitions and slowly made friends with many students from different countries. I was rebuffed by some students but I did not give up. I still tried to approach other students and succeeded in my effort. Today I have a big circle of friends from all over the world. This has improved my interpersonal as well as communication skills.

It is with great confidence that I am applying for this program in Finance .I am sure I would do well in my higher education in this diverse environment and would make the best of my time here.
