Name of Applicant Koji Yamashita

Professionally, I aim to promote sound economic growth in order to make people wealthier by improving business environments for private enterprises. In order to realize this goal, in just six years, I have achieved a great deal as a government officer in Japan.

One of the achievements was my contribution in improving the quality of foreign aid to developing countries. I drafted policy proposals that stressed that foreign aid from Japan to developing countries should be designed to facilitate activities of private companies, which would lead to further economic growth. While my proposals were highly appreciated, I feel that they would have been more sophisticated if I had possessed a better understanding of related subjects like economics and politics.

Another of my achievements was that I devised negotiation strategies for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Peru, which would contribute in smooth business transactions between the two countries. My negotiation strategies helped in pushing the negotiation forward. This fulfilling experience of being a successful strategic negotiator of the FTA sparked my interest in the economic and theoretical aspects of the governmental activities related to private business.

My experience of working with the Japanese government has helped me in gaining those invaluable practical insights that have greatly contributed in making the functioning of private business sector very smooth. However, I do not think that my achievements reflect my full potential. Therefore, I want to take my understanding to a deeper level in the field of public-private policy and its management, particularly from the perspective of getting educational opportunities outside Japans borders.

There are three major reasons of why I am interested in this program. Firstly, I am eager to gain expert knowledge that is research-based and can be applied across all situations. This program provides excellent courses, which exactly matches my interest area.

Secondly, I want to obtain skills that are helpful in policy making through courses and capstone seminar in the program. They would particularly help me in developing fundamental skills such as excellent writing and effectively speaking during discussions as well as acquiring policy analysis and evaluation techniques in my future work of policy management in my Ministry.

Finally, the idea of studying in Washington D.C. where lots of key politicians and bureaucrats live and work, really attracts my interests. I want to make diverse personal connections with people studying as well as working in this famous and happening place in order to promote sound and prosperous relationship between Japan and U.S. in future.

Applying whatever I have learned in this program, to my future profession, would contribute in enabling me to successfully overcome the complicated challenges and achieve success in diverse fields like International Organizations and higher-level positions in my Ministry. Additionally, in the long term, the personal connections will not only lead to specific benefits like valuable information but also strengthen my motivations. This will enable me to help in boosting the economic growth and enhancing peoples wealth by improving business environments.
